"Baby's feet must be followed with care from the very beginning. About 60% of the adult population has unhealthy feet. This fact is due mainly because of the use of the wrong type of shoes during childhood" Dr. Franz Grill M.D, Medical Director of the largest orthopedic hospital in Central Europe.
We have listed some of the most frequently asked questions in regards to children's feet.
My baby has flat feet. Is this normal?
"Fat-storing" feet will most likely not last long. Normally by 3 years old "the arch" appears. In the first couple of years, baby fat, flexible foot bones,
and joints tend to make child's feet look flat when standing. It may happen to one or both feet. Don't worry too much. Flat feet normally wont cause a problem later. However if this is a concern please visit a Podiatrist.
What does a Podiatrist do?
A podiatrist also known as a chiropodist diagnoses and treats abnormalities in the lower limb. They give professional advise on the prevention of foot problems
and on proper care of the foot.
When should I buy my baby his or hers first pair of shoes?
Ideally a child should not require shoes until they're walking on their own. In order for the foot to develop normally and naturally, children should be barefoot for as long as possible when practical and safe.
What style of shoe is best for a baby who just started walking?
Shoes for infants should be light weight, made of breathable materials, (leather or canvas NOT plastic), with soles so flexible you can feel baby's toes through them. We recommend PEDIPED. They are known for being "The next best thing to bare feet."
How often do I need to change my child's shoes?
On average a child should be checked by a trained shoe fitter every 6-8 weeks, to insure that shoes still fit properly for length and width.
This is usually done at the store where you purchase their shoes.
What characteristics do I look for when buying my children's shoes?
The appropriate shoe should be made of leather or canvas. Children's feet perspire greatly and the upper part of their shoes should be made of breathable materials. Leather and canvas allows the foot to breathe. Avoid man made materials such as plastic. Make sure the insole is made of absorbent and antibacterial material. Padded insoles are also recommended. A high top shoe stays on the foot better than an oxford or a low top tennis shoe. A leather or canvas style shoe is more secure, will stay on the foot, and will fit fat little feet better. |
